“B&B remodeled my guest and master bathrooms after a bad experience with another contractor. We were pleased with the superior standard of workmanship. The good communication with all members of the team. we were assigned Daniel, as our project manager who went above and beyond to assist us when we ran into issues of materials procurement. We were also assigned an assistant project manager and a designer who assisted with all material purchases and questions and helped get them ready before our project started. The project was delayed a bit but still completed within the promised time frame. The price was reasonable, and we are happy with the end results.”
“We worked with Zion and his team for remodeling 3 bathrooms, some improvements in the kitchen and remodel a fireplace wall. BnB handled all the permits and inspections smoothly. Miguel was our foreman and his crew including Angel & Giovani were all really skilled and good at their job! Miguel himself is very hands-on and aims for perfection in his work. Even after the project. Zion has been very responsive for any fixes and tweaks to have a better finish to the work. We would recommend them for your next home improvement project! Special mention for Brenda for going above and beyond her role! The team put in extra hours to get our home ready for move-in and we are very grateful. Thank you BnB Team.”
“Brother and Brother Builders can be trusted and relied on. I took my permitted plans for a one-bedroom apartment above existing garage to them and they made it a reality! Daniel, Nick and Zion kept me updated on all aspects of the project including timing, budget, finish materials and delays(yes PGE…). The communication with the brother and brother team is top notch as well as the build quality. You simply cannot find this from every company. If you are lucky enough to work with Brother and Brother, you cannot go wrong.”
“I’ve never really had a bad contractor, but I have now experienced a great one. My project was completed on time, and everything went smoothly. Reem was very available and responded timely to my questions. Elinor did a fantastic job of helping me find the right porcelain, tile, cabinetry and fixtures AND she provided an awesome 3D rendition of both my bathroom and kitchen. Excellent communication. Julio and team did an exceptional job, everything they did was done with attention to detail. I’m so glad I found Brother and Brother Building, I couldn’t be any happier. Professional, top notch and definitely competitively priced. You will not regret hiring them for your next project.”
“My wife recently contacted Brother and Brother Builders to renovate our house, and we have nothing but praise for these builders. Reem and his staff provided committed management and went above and beyond to make sure that everything was completed to our satisfaction throughout the process. Why Invest in Custom Kitchen Cabinets?
Built for Your Space
Standard cabinets often waste valuable storage space due to awkward sizing and fixed formats. Our custom-built cabinets are precisely measured and cut to fit your kitchen’s unique dimensions, allowing for full height usage, seamless corner solutions, and built-in appliance integration.
Designed for Your Style
From sleek modern finishes to warm traditional wood tones, our kitchen cabinets are available in dozens of customizable styles and colors. San Jose homeowners frequently favor two-tone schemes (e.g., white uppers and navy lowers), natural wood grains, and minimalist slab doors to reflect a clean California aesthetic.
Engineered to Last
We go beyond surface-level appeal with quality engineering. All our cabinets feature hardwood or plywood construction, dovetail joints, and soft-close mechanisms to extend the lifespan of your investment. These components are designed to withstand heavy daily use, heat, and moisture common in busy family kitchens.
Made-to-Order vs. RTA Cabinets: What’s Right for You?
Choosing between custom cabinets and ready-to-assemble cabinets depends on your project scope, budget, and timeframe:
- Made-to-Order Cabinets are ideal for homeowners seeking tailored design, premium materials, and a perfect fit. They’re best for new home construction or luxury renovations where design is a priority.
- RTA Cabinets offer savings in both time and cost. These cabinets ship quickly and are manufactured to standard dimensions. They’re a strong choice for rental properties, flip projects, or mid-range updates.
We help clients weigh the trade-offs during our design consultations, ensuring you select the best solution for your space.
Quality That Goes Beyond the Surface
San Jose’s climate and active lifestyles demand cabinets that hold up. Our kitchen cabinetry includes high-performance features like:
- Full hardwood or plywood construction: These materials resist sagging, cracking, and warping far better than particleboard alternatives.
- Dovetail drawer joints: Known for their interlocking strength, dovetails provide superior durability in high-use drawers.
- Soft-close drawers and doors: Prevent slamming and extend the life of both cabinets and hardware.
- Protective finishes: Our finishes are water- and heat-resistant, making cleanup easier and reducing long-term wear.
Cabinets are available with interior upgrades like:
- Pull-out spice racks and trash drawers
- Corner carousel units (lazy Susans)
- Deep drawers for pots and pans
- Adjustable shelving and lighting-ready interiors
Stock, Semi-Custom or Custom Cabinets: Which Grade Fits Your Kitchen?
Most cabinets sold for a San Jose kitchen remodel fall into three grades: stock, semi-custom and custom. The grade you pick shapes your budget, lead time and fit. Here is how they compare.
| Stock | Semi-custom | Custom | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it is made | Mass-produced in standard sizes, designs and finishes | Factory-made from a standard line, with changes allowed | Built for your kitchen from the ground up |
| Sizing | Fixed sizes; gaps may need filler panels | Width, depth or height adjustable in small increments | Every size set to your exact space |
| Typical box material | Often particleboard or MDF | Often plywood boxes | Chosen per project, including plywood or solid wood |
| Design choices | Limited styles and colors | Wider range, within the manufacturer’s options | Any size, material, finish and feature |
| Cost and lead time | Lowest cost, fastest | Mid-range | Highest cost, longest build time |
Stock cabinets suit quick or budget-conscious projects where a simple layout works. Because they only come in standard dimensions, they may leave gaps that need supplementary panels. Semi-custom cabinets are a middle ground for homeowners who want a better fit and better materials without a fully custom build, though some design details stay limited to what the manufacturer offers. Custom cabinets make the most sense for older homes, kitchens with unusual proportions, or anyone who wants to use every inch of storage and remove awkward gaps.
The same source suggests weighing three things: what the cabinets need to do, your budget, and how long you plan to use them. Source: MRD Lumber, three grades of kitchen cabinets. If your existing cabinet boxes are sound and you mainly want a new look, compare these options with cabinet refacing before committing to new boxes. New cabinets are usually one part of a larger kitchen remodel, so settle the grade early.
Cabinet Materials and California's Formaldehyde Rules
Many cabinet boxes, shelves and doors are made from composite wood: hardwood plywood, particleboard or medium density fiberboard (MDF). These panels are bonded with resins that typically contain formaldehyde. On April 26, 2007, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) approved a regulation to reduce formaldehyde emissions from these products, and it names cabinets as one of the finished goods that must meet the emission standards and be labeled. Source: CARB Composite Wood Products Program.
A national rule followed. Since March 22, 2019, regulated composite wood products made in or imported into the United States must be certified and labeled as TSCA Title VI compliant. Source: U.S. EPA formaldehyde standards for composite wood products.
What this means when you choose cabinets for a San Jose home:
- Look for the label. CARB says you may see wording such as “California 93120 Compliant for Formaldehyde,” “California Phase 2 Compliant” or TSCA Title VI on the product or on the shipping box. A missing label does not always mean the product is noncompliant; you can ask the retailer for verification.
- Ask about NAF or ULEF. The rule includes provisions for no-added formaldehyde (NAF) and ultra-low emitting formaldehyde (ULEF) resins, but CARB notes these are hard to identify unless the manufacturer says so.
- Ventilate after install. Formaldehyde off-gassing is highest when a product is new and decreases over time. Opening windows and running exhaust fans speeds it up, and warmer, more humid air can increase emissions.

In San Jose, custom kitchen cabinets typically range from $15,000 to $35,000 or more, depending on materials, design complexity, and kitchen size. Premium finishes, smart storage features, and integrated lighting can increase costs, but also add long-term value.
San Jose’s dry summers and mild winters are ideal for hardwood and plywood cabinets, which resist warping and swelling. At Brother and Brother Builders, we recommend moisture-resistant finishes and durable hardwood frames to ensure your cabinets hold up over time.
Custom cabinets are best for homeowners looking for personalized design, unique layouts, or maximizing limited space. Ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets are ideal for budget-friendly remodels or investment properties. We help you compare both during your consultation.
For a standard kitchen, cabinet installation typically takes 3 to 5 days. Custom projects or full remodels may require more time for fabrication and fitting. We provide clear timelines and keep you updated throughout the process.
If you’re only replacing cabinets without altering plumbing, electrical, or structure, permits are usually not required. However, for remodels involving layout changes, permits may be needed. Our team will handle all necessary permitting for you.
Shaker-style cabinets are the top choice, followed by flat panel and two-tone cabinets. San Jose homeowners often seek modern finishes with integrated storage features, especially in tech-centric and open-concept homes.
It means the composite wood in the cabinets (hardwood plywood, particleboard or MDF) was certified to meet federal formaldehyde emission standards. The EPA rule was built to match California’s CARB standards, and CARB accepts products labeled TSCA Title VI compliant. Since March 22, 2019, regulated products made in or imported into the U.S. must carry this certification and label.
For many kitchens, yes. Semi-custom cabinets come from a manufacturer’s standard line but let you adjust width, depth or height in small increments and choose from more finishes and door styles. They often use plywood boxes. The trade-off is that some design details stay limited to the manufacturer’s options, so very unusual layouts may still call for fully custom work.
Not always. CARB notes that varnishes, paints and other finishes can also cause odor, so a smell does not prove formaldehyde is off-gassing. Where formaldehyde-based resins are used, emissions are highest when the product is new and drop over time. Opening windows and running exhaust fans helps, and lower temperature and humidity can reduce emissions.
