Types of Residential Interior Painting We Offer

Whole-Home Interior Painting

Our full interior painting service transforms your entire living space, perfect for recent movers or full renovations. This includes consistent color schemes throughout or custom combinations for different rooms. Our process ensures uniform application, clean transitions between rooms, and meticulous attention to detail.

Accent Walls & Feature Colors

Add personality to your rooms with an accent wall or bold feature color. Whether you’re looking to highlight a fireplace, bookshelf wall, or bedroom headboard area, we help you choose complementary tones that create depth, contrast, and visual interest, enhancing the entire room’s ambiance.

Ceiling, Trim & Baseboard Painting

Often overlooked, ceilings and trim are essential for a polished look. We specialize in painting crown molding, door frames, baseboards, and ceilings, using appropriate finishes that resist wear and add subtle elegance. Fresh trim can help make even older interiors feel modern and clean.

Drywall Patch & Paint Services

Walls that have suffered wear and tear? We restore them to like-new condition. Our team repairs holes, dings, and water damage, then applies primer and topcoat to blend repairs seamlessly. This service is ideal for homeowners preparing to sell or those updating neglected rooms.

Cabinet & Built-in Painting

Rather than replacing cabinets, painting them is a cost-effective way to update your kitchen or built-in shelving. We clean, sand, and apply a durable enamel finish that resists daily wear. Homeowners can expect a sleek, factory-like finish that revitalizes your space without a full remodel. Learn more about our kitchen cabinet services. Interior Painting as Part of a San Jose Remodel

In many San Jose homes, fresh paint is the last step of a larger project. Walls get opened for new wiring or plumbing, drywall is patched, cabinets or flooring change, and then the rooms are painted so everything looks finished together. Planning paint inside a home remodel means the walls are painted once, after the messy work is done, instead of being touched up again later.

Permits are a common question. The City of San Jose lists painting as a cosmetic surface improvement that does not require a building permit, along with cabinet refacing or replacement, countertop replacement, floor finishes and sheetrock taping (fire-rated sheetrock is the exception and does require a permit). Source: City of San Jose, When Is a Building Permit Required?

The same City page notes what does need a permit, and it often shows up in the same project as the paint:

  • Alteration of walls or any structural change
  • Electrical, plumbing or mechanical work unless exempted
  • Installation of major appliances

The City also notes that even exempt work may not violate City codes or state or federal laws. So painting alone needs no permit, but if a wall moves or a circuit is added before the walls are painted, that part of the job is permitted work. If damaged walls need attention first, see our drywall repair service.

Painting a Pre-1978 Home: EPA Lead-Safe Rules

If your San Jose home was built before 1978, lead-based paint rules can shape how the walls are prepped. Under the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule, firms doing renovation, repair and painting work that disturbs lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and kindergartens built before 1978 must be EPA- or state-certified and must use certified renovators who follow lead-safe work practices. These requirements became fully effective April 22, 2010. Source: EPA, Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Program Rules

Prep is where this matters most, because scraping and sanding old paint is what creates dust. The EPA describes lead-safe setup steps that include:

  • Removing furniture, rugs, curtains and other household items from the work area
  • Covering floors with plastic sheeting and sealing items that cannot be moved
  • Closing and sealing doors to the work area
  • Turning off forced-air heating and cooling and covering vents with plastic
  • Misting surfaces before sanding or scraping to keep dust down

The EPA says the older a home is, the more likely it has lead-based paint, and it recommends a certified lead inspector or risk assessor test the surfaces being worked on. If you cannot confirm the age of the home, the EPA says it is safest to assume the paint contains lead. Source: EPA, RRP Program for Do-It-Yourselfers

Low-VOC Paint Rules in the Bay Area

Paint gives off volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as it is applied, and so do the solvents used to thin paint and clean equipment. In California, limiting VOCs from architectural coatings is mainly the job of local air districts, with the California Air Resources Board acting as an oversight agency. Source: California Air Resources Board, Architectural Coatings.

San Jose is in the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, which regulates paint under Regulation 8, Rule 3 (Architectural Coatings). The rule sets maximum VOC content by type of coating and applies both to anyone who sells or supplies coatings in the District and to anyone who applies them. It also says a painter may not thin a coating beyond its VOC limit, and that containers of paint, solvent and used cleanup rags must be kept closed when not in use.

Paint containers show their VOC content in grams per liter along with the manufacturer’s thinning recommendation, so you can compare products on the label. If you or someone in your household is sensitive to odors, ask for low- or zero-VOC products and plan to ventilate the rooms while the paint cures.

How much does interior painting cost in San Jose, CA?

The cost depends on the size and complexity of the project. In San Jose, a single room typically costs $400–$1,000, while a full interior repaint for a five-room home averages $4,000–$8,500. Cabinet and trim painting may cost more due to prep and finish quality. We provide free estimates tailored to your space and needs.

How long does an interior painting project take?

Most single-room projects can be completed in a day or two. A full home may take 5–10 days, depending on surface prep, number of coats, and drying time. We schedule efficiently to minimize disruption while maintaining top-quality results.

Do I need to move out during the painting process?

Not at all. For most residential interior projects in San Jose, you can remain in your home. We follow a one-room-at-a-time process, using low-odor, low-VOC paints and keeping work areas clean and contained.

What’s the best time of year to schedule interior painting in San Jose?

Thanks to San Jose’s mild climate, interior painting can be scheduled year-round. However, winter and early spring are ideal times when humidity is low and schedules are more flexible.

Can you help with color selection?

Yes! Our painters offer color consultations as part of your project. We consider lighting, room function, and local design trends to help you choose shades that elevate your interior.

Is low-VOC paint really necessary?

In San Jose, where indoor air quality is a growing concern, we highly recommend low-VOC or zero-VOC paints. These products are safer for families and pets and comply with California environmental standards.

Do I need a permit to paint the inside of my house in San Jose?

No. The City of San Jose lists painting as a cosmetic surface improvement that does not require a building permit. If the same project includes wall changes, structural work, or electrical, plumbing or mechanical work that is not exempt, that part of the work does need a permit. Exempt work still has to follow City codes and state and federal law.

Does the EPA lead-safe rule apply if I paint my own pre-1978 home?

Generally, no. The EPA says the RRP Rule does not usually apply to homeowners working on their own home. It does apply if you rent out all or part of the home, run a child care center there, or renovate homes to sell for profit. EPA still recommends lead-safe work practices, and it requires contractors doing this work in pre-1978 homes to be lead-safe certified.
