“B&B remodeled my guest and master bathrooms after a bad experience with another contractor. We were pleased with the superior standard of workmanship. The good communication with all members of the team. we were assigned Daniel, as our project manager who went above and beyond to assist us when we ran into issues of materials procurement. We were also assigned an assistant project manager and a designer who assisted with all material purchases and questions and helped get them ready before our project started. The project was delayed a bit but still completed within the promised time frame. The price was reasonable, and we are happy with the end results.”
“We worked with Zion and his team for remodeling 3 bathrooms, some improvements in the kitchen and remodel a fireplace wall. BnB handled all the permits and inspections smoothly. Miguel was our foreman and his crew including Angel & Giovani were all really skilled and good at their job! Miguel himself is very hands-on and aims for perfection in his work. Even after the project. Zion has been very responsive for any fixes and tweaks to have a better finish to the work. We would recommend them for your next home improvement project! Special mention for Brenda for going above and beyond her role! The team put in extra hours to get our home ready for move-in and we are very grateful. Thank you BnB Team.”
“Brother and Brother Builders can be trusted and relied on. I took my permitted plans for a one-bedroom apartment above existing garage to them and they made it a reality! Daniel, Nick and Zion kept me updated on all aspects of the project including timing, budget, finish materials and delays(yes PGE…). The communication with the brother and brother team is top notch as well as the build quality. You simply cannot find this from every company. If you are lucky enough to work with Brother and Brother, you cannot go wrong.”
“I’ve never really had a bad contractor, but I have now experienced a great one. My project was completed on time, and everything went smoothly. Reem was very available and responded timely to my questions. Elinor did a fantastic job of helping me find the right porcelain, tile, cabinetry and fixtures AND she provided an awesome 3D rendition of both my bathroom and kitchen. Excellent communication. Julio and team did an exceptional job, everything they did was done with attention to detail. I’m so glad I found Brother and Brother Building, I couldn’t be any happier. Professional, top notch and definitely competitively priced. You will not regret hiring them for your next project.”
“My wife recently contacted Brother and Brother Builders to renovate our house, and we have nothing but praise for these builders. Reem and his staff provided committed management and went above and beyond to make sure that everything was completed to our satisfaction throughout the process. Reem kept me updated about every step of the project. The job did take a little longer than anticipated, but the outcome was worthwhile. The team is of the highest caliber, and I am delighted with the result.”

Quartz Countertops and California's Proposed Rule (2026 Update)
Engineered quartz, also called artificial or engineered stone, is made mostly of crushed quartz bound with resin. Cutting and polishing it releases crystalline silica dust, and California has linked that dust to a serious outbreak of silicosis among the workers who fabricate countertop slabs.
On September 16, 2026, Cal/OSHA released a draft emergency rule that would prohibit the manufacture and fabrication of artificial-stone countertops in California. Public comments are open through September 30, 2026. The rule has not been adopted yet. Since December 2024, a permanent state standard has already required fabrication shops to control silica dust, including a ban on dry-cutting.
- Quartz countertops already installed in your home are not the target of the proposed rule. It deals with making and cutting slabs.
- If the rule is adopted, new engineered-quartz countertops may become harder to get in California.
- Natural stone (granite, quartzite, marble), porcelain and solid-surface materials are outside the proposed ban.
We’ll keep this page updated as the rule moves forward. Source: Public Health Watch, September 16, 2026.
Choosing a Countertop Material
| Material | Strengths | Things to know |
|---|---|---|
| Granite | Natural stone, heat-resistant, every slab is unique | Needs periodic sealing |
| Quartzite | Natural stone with a marble-like look, very hard | Needs sealing; usually a premium choice |
| Marble | Classic, timeless look | Softer; can etch and stain |
| Porcelain / sintered stone | Heat- and stain-resistant, slim profiles | Needs an experienced installer; edges can chip on impact |
| Solid surface | Seamless, repairable, integrated sinks | Less heat-resistant than stone |
| Engineered quartz | Uniform look, non-porous, low maintenance | Subject to California’s proposed fabrication rule (see above) |
The right choice depends on how you cook, how much upkeep you want and the look of the rest of the kitchen. We’ll bring samples and talk through the options at your consultation. Planning a bigger update? See our kitchen remodeling and backsplash installation services.

Quartz is currently the top choice among San Jose homeowners. It offers a sleek appearance, is easy to clean, and resists stains and scratches, making it ideal for busy Bay Area households.
Most projects take 5 to 10 business days, including consultation, measurement, fabrication, and installation. We streamline the process with in-house crews to minimize delays and ensure quality.
For most countertop replacements where plumbing, electrical, or structural changes aren’t involved, permits are not required. If your remodel includes layout changes, we’ll help navigate local permitting with the San Jose Department of Building.
Yes, if your cabinets are in good condition and properly leveled, you can absolutely keep them. We’ll inspect your existing setup during our site visit to ensure compatibility with your new countertop.
Granite is a natural stone, offering unique patterns and high durability, but it requires periodic sealing. Quartz is man-made, more uniform in appearance, non-porous, and virtually maintenance-free, ideal for modern kitchens across San Jose.
Not yet. On September 16, 2026, Cal/OSHA released a draft emergency rule that would prohibit manufacturing and fabricating artificial-stone (engineered quartz) countertops, because cutting it causes silicosis in workers. Comments are open through September 30, 2026, and the rule has not been adopted. Countertops already installed in homes are not its target.
